French Naval architects Marc Van Peteghem & Vincent Lauriot-Prévost the creators of a large number of the 60’ catamaran ORMA fleet and of ocean going catamarans ranging from 12 metres to over 40 metres LOA have been commissioned to design the new Bis 77’ for the Italian yard MultiYacht Compositi di Senigallia (AN). The Owners brief called for a high performance yacht, very stiff and light but with very detailed luxury interiors, so from the start the use of composites was imposed. Trimarine was called in to manage the project given it’s extensive experience in large composite structures. Trimarine’s brief included the assistance to the yard’s management in the choice and organization of a facility capable of housing a 24 m x 11 m hull and then the construction follow up, systems installation and launching of the yacht. Most of the first year was dedicated to the production of the moulds which were designed with a particular assembly procedure in mind to facilitate production and taking into consideration the large dimensions of the yacht and the geometry of the building facility. Hull, deck and superstructure was of vacuum consolidated sandwich construction using glass and carbon fibres laminated over variable thickness and density PVC foam cores with epoxy resin. The result was structural weight of 7500kg a remarkable value if we consider the over 650 sqm surface of the vessel. The second year saw Trimarine and Multiyacht’s efforts dedicated to the installation of onboard systems and interior furniture with special attention to the very tight weight budget. During the summer of 2003 “Coriolan VI” was delivered to a very experienced Owner, a keen upwind sailor that was very positively impressed with the sailing ability of the Bis 77’, by far a better performer than the typical large cruising cats.
